Proverbs Chapter 14 ***This pertains to male and female not just(he)being male***
Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Over and over again, the Holy Spirit alludes to the”woman”whether “strange”,”evil”,”foolish”,”gracious”or”virtuous”. In this verse,He speaks both of the”wise”and”foolish”woman in the building of their”house”.
2 He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the Lord: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.
Once again, our attention is called to”the fear of the Lord”or the lack of such.We learn from this and many other similarScriptures that the Holy Spirit puts great stock in the”fear of the Lord”.
3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
“Pride” is the foundation of all sin. It produces the fountainhead of sin, which is unbelief. those who speak in a prideful way are called”foolish”by the Holy Spirit. The conversation of the “wise”is of humility and, thereby;preserves them.
4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
The sense of the “Passage”is that “you cant make an omelet without breaking some eggs”.
As long as there is activity, there’s going to be some untidiness, but there will always be increase.
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
Men are not liars because they lie;they lie because they are liars.
6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.
The scornful Pharisee professed to seek wisdom and found nothing;to the understanding Ethiopian, knowledge was easy(Acts Chapt 8)Jesus is Wisdom. He was a stumbling stone to the Pharisee, but a steeping stone to the Ethiopian.
7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
This is the Law of Separation(2Corinthians 6:14-18)The only “lips of knowledge”are those that know the Word of God.
8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
The only way that one can”understand his way”is to know the Bible.Such is spoken by the Holy Spirit as “wise and prudent”.
9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.
Fools mock the Sin Offering(the Atonement),but among the righteous it is prized.
10 The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.
The “heart”that is spoken here is the “heart”of a Christian. One who is a”stranger”to God and His Ways has no knowledge of the burden that is carried or the”joy”that resides in the heart of a Christian.
11 The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
The “upright”is a pilgrim, and as such, has no “house,”but rather a tent. This world is not his home and he is seeking a city whose Builder and Maker is God. To the unspiritual eye, such looks not at all stable. But the Holy Spirit says the opposite.
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Salvation by sacraments and personal merit(in other words, any way other than the Cross)is to most men an acceptable way to eternal life, but,in reality it leads to death. the right way is “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified”, and that alone (1Corinthians 1:23)
13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
A false way of salvation of which many abound, may bring momentary surface”laughter”. but it will not, and in fact, cannot satisfy the hunger and craving of the human heart. When it;’s all over, the”heart”is “sorrowful” and”heavy”.
14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.
This speaks of the fact that the”backslider” backslides in his heart first before it becomes outwardly observable.
15 The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
Two individuals are placed before us;”the simple” and the”prudent”. Irrespective of their education,God calls “simple” those who believe every word, except the Bible. The Holy Spirit calls”prudent” the one who”looks well to his going,”which refers to searching out the Bible for its direction.
16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
The”wise man”believes the Bible, fears God and “departs from evil.
17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
The quickly angered will always deal foolishly. As well, the cool tempered intriguer is the opposite of the above, but his coolness under pressure does not denote piety, but rather a scheming for personal gain. Both the quick tempered and the intriguer are led by their own impulses and not by God. Both will lead to wrong paths.
18 The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
To the unspiritual ear,Verse 18 seems to be a repetition of Verse 15,however the Holy Spirit, from many directions, attempts to get us to understand that He calls those who do not believe the Bible”simple”irrespective of their otherwise,so called education.
19 The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
Good will eventually triumph, even though at present it seems impossible.
20 The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.
Jesus was despised and hated(Isaiah Chapt 53)
21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. In this Proverb, the Lord tells us that He will look after”the poor”who trust in Him.
22 Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
Concerning the affairs of life, all that is devised outside of the Bible is “evil”.All the truly”good”that is devised comes from the Bible, and will give”mercy” and”truth”.
23 In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.
There are many who talk much but do nothing. those who truly”labor”will know”profit”(Mat 6:7)
24 The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.
Riches do not make a fool cease his “foolishness”;even though he is rich,he is still a”fool”.
25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.
A Preacher of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ is a true witness and greatly helps men;the Preacher of”modern thought”and another”gospel”propagates falsehood and thereby, leads men to destructioin(2corinthians 11:4)
26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
Once again, the Holy Spirit points to the”fear of the Lord”. Such is the foundation of true righteousness.
27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
To escape eternal death and be united to life, there is one sure and only way;it is the fear(HOLY FEAR)of Jehovah. That means to love, serve, and follow the Lord Jesus Christ(Luke 9:23-24)
28 In the multitude of people is the king's honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
AT the present,”The King”;(The Lord Jesus Christ)does not have “the multitude”on His side. In the coming of the Kingdom Age,this will change, and all will serve Him.
29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
The quick tempered are that way for a reason:such shows pride and thereby lack of trust in God. The one who is”slow to wrath”and is,thereby,”of great understanding”shows that his dependence is in the Lord and not in himself.
Rosemary speaking.. Lord ,even though we are justified and righteous in your eyes when we gave our hearts to you and are”Born Again” our hearts need to be sanctified here in this earth to reflect who you are. Search me Oh God and find there any wicked way within me-Sanctify me and enable me to repent and be aware of anything that is NOT of You.
30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
In this Proverb, the Holy Spirit is portraying to us the secret of good health. A “sound heart”is the heart that is right with God.No envy, jealousy, pride, malice, greed or hatred abides there. If such abides, we are told it “rots the bones”
Rosemary speaking.. Lord the closer we get to knowing you, reading your word and understanding(WHICH the BIBLE IS YOU)the more we see sin in us and see how wicked our hearts truly are. The sinful nature keeps surfacing. Keeping our laser beam focus only on you and what you have accomplished on the cross sanctifies us to be more Christlike and depletes the sinful nature still within us. Let this journey be victorious!.Thank you for what you have done at the cross. I love You..
31 He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.
Most of the world oppresses the poor and thereby reproach God,because God made all men, whether they be rich or poor. Then the Holy Spirit plainly tells us that if we honor God,we will have”mercy” on the poor.
32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.
Belshazzar illustrates the first line of this Verse’the Apostle Paul the second line.
33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.
The sense of this Proverb is that a wise man does not display his wisdom, but a fool parades all he knows.
34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
This holds true for any nation. “Much Bible, much freedom;little Bible, little freedom;no Bible no freedom.
35 The king's favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.
The”wise servant”will know his Bible, and consequently has “understanding.”
