Proverbs 13 **Pertains to Sons and Daughters****
King James Version
13 A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
The surface meaning of this passage is obvious;constructive criticism by the wise is needed. Those who are not wise, scorn the rebuke and continue on their erroneous way.
2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
In a spiritual sense, the”Fruit of our mouth”should be the Wordrd of God.
4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
This passage proclaims the blessing of the work ethic and the poverty of the lazy.
5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
The entirety of the worlds system which is “Godless”is based on “lying”,hence all the problems.
6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
The obvious sense is that”wickedness”will ultimately bring the “sinner”to ruin, and that”Righteousness”which can only be supplied by Christ and is freely imputed y Him,will guarantee success.
7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
This speaks of those who have much money;but yet they are very poor, simply because they are selfish and give no help to anyone. Then there are those who use what comes into their hands as a blessing to others. In the things that really count they have”great riches”.
8 The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.
The sense of this Passage is that the hoarding of wealth makes a mans life his”ransom”.In other words, because of his riches,he is the target in many respects.
9 The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
The “light”of the”righteous” is the”light”that comes from the Bible. It is the”light”that Christ produces in the lives of His followers. Such brings rejoicing.
10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
“Pride”is the foundation of all sin(Prov 6:16-17)It stems from Satan as humility stems fromChrist. “Pride” breeds “contention”,because its ever seeking its own. Humility, which can only be given by Christ, generates”wisdom”. The Holy SPirit calls such”well advised”.
11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
The sense of this passage is that”wealth”gathered by labor benefits society, but”wealth”obtained by gambling, crime or any other means is”vanity. It is useless to the well being of society.
12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
All “hope”outside of Christ is never realized. All “hope”In Christ is ever realized.
13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
The”Word of God”is the only answer for the ills of man. As well, one can only know the Word if one also knows its author.
14 The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
The”wise”to who the Holy Spirit refers are those who adhere to the Word of God. God has ordained it a “Law”that such will be a”fountain of life”. everything outside of the Bible is a”snare of death”.
15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.
Those who transgress the Word of God will find their way hard.
16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.
The spiritual sense of the Proverb is that all true”knowledge”comes from the Bible, and the man who seeks this”knowledge” is prudent(wise).
17 A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.
If an”ambassador”is”faithful”to the Bible,he will bring messages of “health”;if not, then”mischief”.
18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
If the individual faithfully follows the instruction given by the Word of God,he will at the same time, highly regard the”reproof”of those who try to instruct him for the better.
Rosemary speaking..Yes,this is very important! If we don’t,well then we are of the sin of pride. We must pray constantly to abolish this sin in us. PRIDE and Rebellion.
19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.
To obtain what is really desirable demands self -denial. But it is most distasteful to a fool to obtain anything
worthful by the surrender of worthless and injurious pleasures.
20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
Every Christian should diligently search for the Preacher who preaches the whole Counsel of God. If he does otherwise,he is associating with”fools”and will come to destruction.
21 Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.
God’s law is that if a person wills evil,God wills evil unto them. If he wills”good”the Lord also wills”good”to him(Gal 6:7)
22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
The term”laid up”as it pertains to the”wealth of the sinner”refers to the coming Kingdom Age,when the meek shall inherit the Earth.(Matt 5:5)
23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.
The sense of this Proverb is that”the poor” are in their state partly because of bad management. They have very little foresight. When they get something, they quickly spend it and very seldom endeavor to plan ahead.
24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Hatred spares the rod;love uses it
25 The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
This,as well, constitutes a Law of God:”the righteous”are content with moderate desires and pleased with their lot in life. Conversely,”the wicked”regardless of how much they have, are never satisfied.
