Proverbs 10
King James Version
**Pertains to Sons and daughters**
The Wise and the Foolish Contrasted
10 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
The”wise son”is the one who follows the Word of God which will make glad his earthly father and his Heavenly Father. Such is contrasted with “the foolish son”who is the opposite.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
There are some who may tend to disagree with this statement;however, the type of “profit” of which the Holy SPirit is speaking is that which is eternal and consequence.
3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
This speaks of the Lord taking care of the “righteous”regarding material needs, and serving as a shield regarding Satanic attacks (Gen 15:1)
4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
The words “slack hand”actually means “deceitful hand”.
5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
This proverb demonstrates”diligence”.
6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
The argument of verse 6 thru 7 is that a righteous person is a fount of blessing to society, but an unrighteousness person is a source of injury, even though he tries to hide the fact with honeyed words.
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
The”wise”are those who follow the commandments of the Lord.
9 He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
Such a person is never afraid of detection, because he never acts in deceit.
10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.
(“To wink with an eye”in the east as well as other parts of the world,is a method of signaling a bribe to a judge or,in general society,of injuring the character of an acquaintance.
11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
The only”life”in this world is that is given by Christ. Ideally, the”mouth”of such a one becomes a fount of blessing.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
Those who love to stir up the failings of others, while hiding their own, show that their hearts are filled with”hatred”.
Rosemary speaking.. SO true :( I have experienced this.
13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
Those who understand and believe the Bible become a fount of wisdom;however, for the Beleiver ,who strays from the Bible, chastisement from God will be forthcoming(Heb 12:5-8)
14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
Those who truly know the Bible will not repeat the negative things they hear about others;conversely, the fool repeats them everywhere and causes strife.
15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
The rich,in order to become richer and to accumulate even more, will oftentimes destroy the poor.
16 The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.
In many and varied ways, the Holy Spirit proclaims the desired direction, which gives life. He also points put the way of the wicked, which brings death.
17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
The”instruction”that is spoken of here is the “Bible”and it points to “the way of life”.
18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.
“Hypocrisy”deals with the first part of this verse, while “gossip”deals with the latter part.
19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Those who talk a lot, especially about other people, will usually sin with their tongues.
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
The”tongue of the just”will be quick to hear and slow to speak.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
The”righteous”bless,while the unrighteousness curse.
Rosemary speaking.. Forgive me Father if my lips and heart spoke sin , make me be a blessing to others with my heart and words.. and never a curse.Amen
22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
Those who ignore the word of God may,for a time,be blessed, but the sorrow that comes with it is so expensive that none can afford it.
23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
The essence of this Proverb is that one who does not know or abide by the Bible will do mischief and cause great harm.
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
Wickedness carries its own “fear”while righteousness dispels all fear.
25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
This proverb portrays the house built upon sand and the house built upon the “Rock”(matt 7:24-27)
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
The Holy Spirit labels as “sluggards”all who do not know and abide by the Bible, they will ultimately prove no good to those who employ their services.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
To “FEAR the LORD”and to serve Him,prolong our lives.
28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
Outside of Christ, there is no hop.
29 The way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
To follow”the way of the LORD”is to constantly gain strength.
30 The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
This points to the coming “Kingdom Age”(Matt 5:5)
31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
All of the boasts of the”froward”(crooked)tongue will come to naught, irrespective of how strong such presently looks. However, that which is said by”the just”will ultimately be realized.
Rosemary speaking.. Praise be to God, our just God who is our defender!
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
The righteous know, because they know what the Bible says, however, the wicked speak crookedly, because they do not know or believe the BIBLE.
Rosemary speaking.. Aside from the righteous knowing the Bible,We are living testimony of what the Bible says and does in our life. TRUTH exemplified! Praise GOD!
