Chapter 9
An Invitation to Wisdom’s Banquet
9 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
“Seven”is Gods number of perfection, totality, completion and universality;its the same Church for all of mankind
2 She hath killed her beasts; animal sacrificeshe hath mingled her wine; joy which comes with salvationshe hath also furnished her table.made provisions for all things.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: the word in the Hebrew refers to both young men and young women sent as missionaries all over the worldshe crieth upon the highest places of the city, uses every means to get out the Gospel
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
Verses 4 thru6 represent the invitation of Wisdom to the lost,in comparison to the invitation extended by the”strange woman”of chapter 7
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
The “bread” and the “wine”symbolize the broken Body of our Lord, along with His shed blood(Matt 26:26-30)1Corinth 10:16-17 )
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
The Holy Spirit is telling us to turn a deaf ear to the “strange woman”(false doctrine and false apostles)and go the way of the Bible, which is true understanding
Rosemary speaking…AMEN to that!
7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
In this passage, the Preachers of verse 3 are told of the reception they will receive. S corners will mock them, and the violent will injure them.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Those who live by ways and means other than the Bible do not know how to take a kind rebuke.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
We are told in this passage that irrespective as to how”wise”one may be the Bible yet will make them” yet wiser”.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Once again, the Holy Spirit tells us that all of our knowledge is futile, unless we have”the Fear of the Lord”. That is the “beginning of wisdom” and that alone.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
Length of physical life is not necessarily intended Ed in this verse, but rather fullness and usefulness of Spiritual life.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
The idea is that the rejector of the Gospel Message must personally suffer the consequences of his rejection
Avoid False Doctrine at all Costs
13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
The”foolish woman”is similar to the “strange woman” of 7:5. It is remarkable the number of times the Holy Spirit likens the infidelity of the female gender to spiritual adultery (Romans 7:1-4)
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
As the Holy Spirit sends His Messengers and the”cry upon high places in the city”(preaching the gospel”likewise, those who peddle their false doctrine also utilize the same “high places”
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
The “simple”of verse 4 are appealed to by the Holy Spirit;they are also appealed to by “the foolish woman”
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
Wisdoms last cry is “forsake the foolish”and live!(Vs 6). The last cry of the “foolish woman”is “Stolen waters are sweet”!.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
The conclusion of all false doctrine propagated by false apostles,of which the”foolish woman”is symbolic is”spiritual death”.
