Proverbs 11
King James Version
The Contrast of the Wise and the Foolish
11 A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.
The tender love of God for men and especially for the poor, appears in these Proverbs, for,if they were obeyed, injustice, dishonesty, fraud and cruelty would cease to exist. Four times it is stated that fraud in business is abominable in God’s sight-(Prov 11:1,16:11,20:10,23)
2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Over and over again, the Holy SPirit portrays humility as the example(Isaiah 66:2)
3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
The word “perverseness”means treacherous and unfaithful. The”integrity”addressed here is Gods integrity, which is His word.
4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
Among men,riches do wonders;with God,they purchase nothing.
5 The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
The word”perfect”here means”blameless”This is the age-old contest between man’s righteousness and God’s Righteouness.
6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
There are two types of righteousness: 1. Imputed Righteousness, which comes from the Lord, and is given to believers upon Faith inChrist and the Cross; and 2.Self-righteousness,which comes about by works, which God will not recognize.
7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
Irrespective of how rich, powerful, strong,or great the wicked are, they will always come to a hopeless end.
8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
Daniel and his wicked accusers demonstrate this Verse.
9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
Jesus exposed these who were quick to point out the faults of others while ignoring their own(Matt 7:1-5)by calling them”hypocrites”.
10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
Mordecai and Haman illustrate this verse.
11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
Unfortunately, the”upright”in any city are seldom noticed, but rather are oftentimes opposed and even persecuted. The”wicked” little know that the ones they are persecuting are the reason for their blessing.
Rosemary speaking.. Oh, what a just God we serve! Thank you Lord.
12 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
Having to live beside a neighbor constantly,it is best to hold our peace regarding many things of which we might like to speak a word.If a man has”understanding”which comes from the Bible alone,he will use such wisdom.
Rosemary speaking.. Needed this wisdom,as I am faced w not so nice things from a not so nice, ignorant neighbor. God is working on me how to react,Lord it’s hard but I thank you for sanctifying me and clearing out my heart things that are not of you so I can be more Christlike. I am trying to be obedient in the “neighbor”issues. Ha😆
13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
In the Hebrew,the word”tale bearer”is a holechrachil”which means”a peddler of scandal”Doeg is a good example of such talebearing(1Samuel 21:7)
14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
The”counsel”addressed here concerns that which comes from the Bible, and the Bible alone.
15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
“Stranger”signifies”one who has forsaken truth.” Such is man. Christ in His love for man, became man’s surety:as a consequence, He was sorely broken at Calvary.
16 A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
Two things are addressed in this proverb-A woman who has grace, and men who have strength. The Lord is the giver of both.
17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
In this one Proverb is found the key to much sickness.
18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
Sadly, almost all of the world is made up of”the wicked”. Consequently, almost everything in the world that is done should come under the heading of” deceitful work”. That is the reason for most sorrow in this world.
19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
In this Proverb,”life” and”death” are set before us,and the cause for both.
20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
The word”froward”refers to one who is disobedient and rebellious. This speaks of one who constantly opposes Gods Will.
21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
There is no way that “the wicked”can avoid the coming punishment, irrespective of their strength or agreements. The”righteous “is Christ, while the”seed”refers to thos who serve Christ.
22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
This refers to a beautiful woman who has no”discretion”. Her beauty is wasted,as a”jewel of gold”would be wasted on the nose of a pig.
23 The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
The word”desire”is a strong word which characterizes the whole of humanity, whether good or bad.
24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
In the abbreviated meaning,the statement is,”what you give,you gain,what you keep you lose”(Luke 6:38,2Corinth 8:15,9:6,Gal 6:7-8)
25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
Who is “the liberal soul”?It is he who”scatters”(gives liberally)into which is definitely of God,and not”false apostles or deceitful workers”.
26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
This speaks of trouble and difficulty that comes to a community when individuals take advantage of such bu increasing the price of the item that is needed, irrespective of the suffering of people.
Rosemary speaking..WoW,this is exactly the evil and tactics of what the democratic Biden administration is manipulating and doing right now..Satan has possessed each and every one of them.Lord please apply justice, you are our judge and defender.
27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
This speaks of seeking the”good”of others.
Rosemary speaking..this is what Biden administration should heed unto..they are forcing and spewing propaganda of unequality, racial injustice,LGBTQ propaganda and making people resent and seek guilt and malady and ill feelings. :( We need you Lord. They are purposely spewing hatred, the media is guilty also! Let them turn from their wicked ways.
28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
Those who trust in God are described as a beautiful branch which continues to grow into a full flower.
29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
This speaks of those who ignore these Proverbs and travel in direction of their own making. They shall “inherit the wind”.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
He who tells others about”Christ “is effect, presenting to them”a tree of life”.
31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
This simply means that all will reap what they sow.
